Bust some common immune system myths. Find out what does and doesn’t make you sick:
Myth: Everybody is born with the same healthy immune system.
Fact: People are born with different immunity levels depending on genetics, the mother’s diet before delivery, breastfeeding, and several other factors.
Myth: Your immunity is good and it will never be compromised.
Fact: You may be born with great immunity but sedentary lifestyle, poor nutrition, stress, lack of enough sleep, smoking, excessive drinking, and other such unhealthy lifestyle choices can weaken it at any stage of life.
Myth: Your immunity remains steady all your life.
Fact: As you age, your immune system tends to get weaker and you become vulnerable to infections that didn’t bother you earlier.
Myth: Exercise will weaken your immune system.
Fact: Low to moderate exercise, for 30 to 60 minutes daily, will boost immunity.
White blood cells flourish when you work out. Exercise increases cell turnover in your body and stimulates the production of important immune cells.
Myth: All orange juice improves immunity.
Fact: Not the sugar-laden readymade variety! If you want to load up on vitamin C also look at kiwis, guavas, tomatoes and tomato juice, strawberries, papaya etc.
