Your mouth, as the gateway into your body, provides an entry-point to bacteria and germs to enter your system.

That’s why maintaining good oral health can help keep your immune system robust and working well. This is all the more important during a pandemic.

Bacteria in your mouth can cause gum disease. Research by the University of Pennsylvania has found that the bacteria that causes gingivitis (a gum disease) “subverts the immune system” and promotes further inflammation.

Inflammation caused by the bacteria is the signal for your immune system to get into action.

When you’re healthy, you may not even notice mild infections because the immune system quickly eliminates them and stops infections.

But when you’re not healthy, the immune system cannot keep up and diseases like heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, eczema, allergic rhinitis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc establish themselves.

Here’s how you can keep your mouth, and overall health, in tip-top shape:

Support your immune system. Eat healthy – avoid acidic drinks and sugar-filled foods, get some exercise every day, drink enough water, and get enough sleep each night to fortify your body’s defence against infections.

Stop smoking. Research from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) has found that smoking facilitates more severe lung infection by coronavirus.

Tobacco is a health super-villain, damaging teeth and gums. Smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, so the infected gums don’t heal.

Smoking also causes gum disease to get worse quickly.

This, other than its disastrous effects on your heart, lungs, brain, skin, fertility and cancer- producing effects. Kick the butt!

Maintain good dental hygiene. Floss, rinse and brush twice daily using a good toothpaste. Have your teeth professionally cleaned regularly.

If you already have gum disease and a compromised immunity, talk to your dentist to come up with a treatment plan that’s right for you.
